Achieving a healthy work-life balance is essential for our overall wellbeing, but it's not always easy to know where to start. That’s why we've broken it down into six key pillars with the help of Dr Kirstie Fleetwood Meade, a chartered counseling psychologist.
1. Your 'why': To start, take some time to visualize what an ideal work-life balance would look like for you. It may seem out of reach, but focusing on little steps can make it feel more achievable. Ask yourself why it's important to you, so you can make decisions that align with your values and goals.
2. Your values and priorities: Identify your core values and how they influence your work-life balance. This will help you make decisions that align with your beliefs and lead to a more fulfilling life.
3. Your barriers or derailers: Pre-empting the things that could throw your work-life balance off track is important. Identify the obstacles that could get in the way and plan how to address them.
4. Your worth and infallibility: Remember, you're important and you can't do it all. Instead of expecting perfection, embrace the idea of 'both/and.' You can be caring for others and still need time to recharge.
5. 'No': Saying no is one of the most important skills in achieving work-life balance. Challenge your perspective on the word 'no' and have some helpful phrases ready. Remember, you can say no and still be a kind person.
6. Your gut feeling: Lastly, listen to your body and tune in to your sensations. Our bodies could hold the key to our true feelings, so pay attention to what a full body 'yes' or 'no' feels like.
Achieving a healthy work-life balance is a journey, not a destination. Start by focusing on these six key pillars to lay the foundation for a more fulfilling life.
